The Girl Who Danced With The Devil

On a Good Friday
Many years ago
In the city of São Carlos
The newspapers told the tale
A very rich girl
Defied her parents' wishes
At a party held in her home
She danced with Satan himself

When the party began
It was about nine o'clock
A well-dressed man arrived
His spurs clinking as he walked
Greeting everyone cheerfully
How are you, ma'am?
I want to meet the party girl
Because I'm arriving now

The old man said to the daughter
Today the party is changed
We are at the end of Lent
And that could be a sin
The girl replied
You're the one who's worried
Jesus Christ is in heaven
And we dance here

Taking the girl’s hand, the man began to dance
As waltzes and mazurkas played
The guy was turning
With his hat still on his head
The girl started to complain
Please, dance properly—
My mother won’t like this behavior
He turned to the girl and said, my time here is done
I must take my leave, for the rooster has crowed
Removing his hat, and the
Two horns he revealed
He looked like an old bull—
One of the fiercest kind

The Devil let out a huff and vanished in an explosion
For the faithless crowd, It became a lifelong lesson
Amidst the chaos, the screams and confusion
The rich girl lost her mind
The daughter of Major Simão
