Saudade de Minha Terra
Sérgio Reis
Longing for My Land
What good is it to live in the city
If happiness doesn't follow me around
Goodbye, my dear Paulistinha
I want to go back to my homeland
To see the dawn, when the birds
Start singing at daybreak
With satisfaction, I saddle up my mule
Hitting the dirt road, I take off galloping
And I hear the cattle mooing
The thrush singing in the Jequitibá
Oh, my beloved homeland
I live with regret for having left you
This new life here in the city
Has made me cry with so much longing
There's someone here who says they care for me
But it doesn't feel right, I've been thinking
I feel sorry, but this girl
Doesn't understand the way I was raised
I'm here singing, listening from afar
Someone's crying with the radio on
What immense longing for the fields and woods
For the gentle stream that cuts through the meadows
On Sundays, I used to paddle around
In the beautiful lagoons of crystal-clear waters
What sweet memories of that big party
Where there were dances and lovely girls
These days, I live without joy
The world is tough, but it also teaches
I'm feeling down, but not defeated
I'm well guided by divine hands
I've already sent a telegram to my dear mother
And I'm tired of suffering so much
This dawn, I'll be leaving
For the beloved land that saw me born
I can already hear the rooster crowing in my dreams
The Inhambu calling as it gets dark
The silver moon lighting up the road
The wet grass since the night fell
I need to go to see everything there
That's where I was born, that's where I want to die
