Sin Fortuna
Gerardo Reyes
Born Without Fortune
I was born without fortune and with nothing
Facing destiny head-on
Even the most miserable would humiliate me
Ignoring me, everyone around
But suddenly my luck has changed
And suddenly I found myself among the crowd
And those people pretending to be happy
In front of a vulgar and deceitful world
Hypocritical, vile, vain people
Whose money means nothing to them
They die just like the poor do
And their grave is the same damn hole
Now I walk different paths
I’m just following my fate
And among the poor, I feel blessed
If it’s love, I give my whole heart
With the poor, I tip my hat
And I scorn even the most powerful
I’m honest and sincere, I tell you
I’ve forged my own destiny
I extend my hand to a friend
But to the rich, I’ll never bow down
I never had the warmth of a kiss
My poor folks worked so hard
They never had time for that
And so I grew up
Not ignoring the tears
I didn’t go to school
I learned when I was older
Letters don’t stick when you’re hungry
And no one lends a hand if you’re poor
That’s why I return to this old town
Where life treated me so badly
And these are my people
I wouldn’t leave for anything
Even if I had to suffer again
I’m honest and sincere, I tell you
I’ve forged my own destiny
I extend my hand to a friend
But to the rich, I’ll never bow down
