Cuando Me Abandone El Alma
Cuti Carabajal
When My Soul Leaves Me
When my soul leaves me, fulfilling my fate
My shadow will go with it, my thick blood of crickets
It will sing in the young flow of the rivers of my children
Maybe I'll long for simple things in my death, my home
Some unfulfilled dream, my beautiful and sweet nostalgia
That I feel when the scents of my childhood come back to me
The noble face of the countryside or sipping mate on a rainy day
Hearing in the old field the chirping of little monkeys
And those wines strummed in a gathering of friends
When you mark my death, don’t cry for my dark night
Bury me in my hometown and then cover me with chacareras
So my soul can take the heart of my land with it
I’ll miss the warm honey of your lips when I die
Your mouth, a swarm of kisses, and all our sins
Those that gave meaning and shelter to my existence
In the afterlife, I’d like to meet on a path
With that tree that was a town of harps and nests
Today my table and my guitar, tomorrow my last refuge
Death is jealous of my beloved flower, life
They say it’s looking for me, I hope if it catches me
I’ll be singing and laughing so it dies of envy
When you mark my death, don’t cry for my dark night
Bury me in my hometown and then cover me with chacareras
So my soul can take the heart of my land with it
