Mi Árbol y Yo
Alberto Cortez
My Tree and I
My mom and I planted it
At the edge of the yard
Where the house ends
It was my dad who brought it
I was five years old
And it was just a little branch
When spring came around
We enriched the soil well
And soaked it with water
With little pieces of wood
We made a barrier
So it wouldn’t get damaged
My tree sprouted, my childhood passed
Today I sit under its shade that grew so much
We have memories, my tree and I
As the years went by
And my pants got longer
I hit my teenage years
It was under my tree's shade
A nap in the summer
Where I lost my innocence
Then it was time for studies
With returns often
But fully aware
A long journey was approaching
One-way ticket only
And that’s how I faced absence
My tree sprouted, my childhood passed
Today I sit under its shade that grew so much
We have memories, my tree and I
Many years have gone by
And I finally returned
To my beloved hometown
And at the edge of the yard
There it was waiting for me
Like you wait for a friend
It seemed to smile at me
Like it wanted to say
Look, I’m full of nests
That tree we planted
Over twenty years ago
When I was just a kid
The one that sprouted and time passed
Half of my life stayed with it
Today under its shade, that grew so much
We have memories, my tree and I
