We were swept away by the waves, under a threatening sky
In waters of shipwreck and tears
Through the waves, we will return
Gliding on a calm sea
To face the hurricanes and our sorrows

My people walked dangerous paths
But their feet do not waver
Centuries of nostalgia and pain will lead us to a path of freedom
And we will turn these waters of sadness into waters of love

God, keep the plague away from my people
And let us see the end of this deadly season
After which everything will live again
And bloom

Soon we will reach the high plateaus of Ethiopia
Where it all began
Where there’s no place for war
And no one knows the word race
Where the purifying rain
Falls to wash our feet from the ashes of our homes
And from the blood of our brothers and sisters

There, those who share the same blood
Do not betray each other
And there is only one law
Of love

We will eat together
From broken vessels
We will eat in peace
