La Primera Mentira
Silvio Rodriguez
The First Lie
When I was in an enchanted forest
I was amazed to hear a stone singing to me
That a stone was singing to me with modulations
And with a tenor's tone, a tenor's tone
Beneath the stone, there was a toad hibernating
And I knew it was the toad that was singing
That it was the toad that was singing
And I kept searching for wonders to know, to know
I wanted a princess turned into a dragon
I wanted a wizard's axe to throw in my pack
I wanted a golden fleece for a kingdom
I wanted Virgil to take me to hell
I wanted to reach the sky on a planted bean
And that’s it
From afar, I saw a fountain shining and I ran to it
Because it had waters of gold
Because it had waters of gold
That color was unmistakable, like honey, like honey
The sun reflected in the abandoned fountain
And I knew it was the sun that was shining
That it was the sun that was shining
Disillusioned twice, I walked away, I walked away
I wanted a princess turned into a dragon
I wanted a wizard's axe to throw in my pack
I wanted a golden fleece for a kingdom
I wanted Virgil to take me to hell
I wanted to reach the sky on a planted bean
And that’s it
After a thousand failures like these
I felt really stupid, we had been fooled
We had been fooled
And I went to find the first man who lied, who lied
I walked the roads, traveled the paths
But when I found the culprit, ah!
But when I found the culprit
A sea of tears, upon seeing me, he begged, he begged
I want a princess turned into a dragon
I want a wizard's axe to throw in my pack
I want a golden fleece for a kingdom
I want Virgil to take me to hell
I want to reach the sky on a planted bean
And that’s it
