Passio Domini
Sanctus Noctis
The Passion of the Lord
In the silent night, in the garden, he prays
His sweat like drops of blood
And Judas comes with a kiss
He betrays the Son of God to his enemies
He is bound like a thief
He is led to unjust judges
He is spat on, mocked
And adorned with a crown of thorns
Behold the Man! The King of humility!
Beaten with scourges, stripped of his garments
Carrying the cross, he ascends Calvary
Silent, like a lamb led to the slaughter
His hands are pierced with nails
His feet are nailed to the tree
He hangs on the cross among the thieves
And the people mock him
Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?
(*My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?)
He was thirsty, but they gave him vinegar
And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost
The earth is covered in darkness
The temple is split, the earth trembles
The cross has become the throne of the eternal King
And through his wounds salvation has come to the world
He was laid in the tomb
But the light did not overcome the darkness
We await his resurrection
The glorious and living Lord
Amen
