The Lark
In a golden cage
Hanging from a balcony
There was a lark
Singing its sorrow
Until a little sparrow
Arrived at its cage
'If you can get me out
I'll go with you'
And the poor little sparrow
Fell in love with her
And as best he could
He broke the wires
And the ungrateful lark
After he freed her
As soon as she was free
She flew, flew, and flew!
The poor little sparrow
Still followed her
To see if she would fulfill
What she promised
The wicked lark
Replied to him:
'I don't know you
Nor have I been caught'
And sadly the little sparrow
Then returned
He stood on an apple tree
Cried, cried, and cried
And now in that cage
Hanging from the balcony
Is the little sparrow
Singing its passion
