Sonho de Agrestina
Nem Walter
Dream of Agrestina
Last night I lay down
When I fell asleep, I dreamed
And in the dream I saw
When Agrestina arrived
When she arrived, she sat
By the side of my bed
Of her sorrowful drama
A little she revealed to me
In the dream, she said this
Don’t be afraid of me
My flesh has met its end
For death comes just once
I’m here with you all
To whom I’m a great friend
And whoever killed me
One day will pay for what they did
She said with a tearful face
Keep my leather hat
As a memory for Zé de Louro
Jacaréu and Manelzinho
And to compadre Macalzinho
Tell him it would be a shame
If he saw my scene
Me dying all alone
At that moment I remembered
You all I used to play with
And the calls I would let out
At the rodeos I went to
But I couldn’t shout
In that sad distress
Seeing that my heart
Didn’t deserve that
The enemy struck
And others mocked me
And I, poor, couldn’t
Defend myself from that
Seeing my blood flow
I realized I was dead
And to give you comfort
In a dream, I came to say
I said: Tell Expedito
To tell Manelzito
That the most distressing moment
I just got through
I didn’t think I’d end up
With no defense at all
Only the bones remain
For anyone who wants to visit
For the people who come and go
In Serra da Russa there’s
A stain of blood too
That as a memory I left
And the tears I shed
As a sign of farewell
In the last moments of life
In the corner where I ended
She said: Go quickly
Sing this tune and ask
Since no one cares
I don’t know what’s going on
Helping you, you come
Don’t get mad at the work
Tell the men that my blood
Is Brazilian too
But my blood is unpunished
That Jesus in heaven gathers
And fate punishes one day
For I trust in Him
They humiliated His life
By sending Him from Caifás
And I suffered much more
Humiliation than He did
Even my eyes burst
And after they killed me
Then they threw my body
Into a deep abyss
In a place so in this world
Similar to a grave
That only vultures prove
That it’s part of the world
Everything I possessed
Ended that day
Also the last agony
I went through and I’m at rest
I was a great friend to the cattle
With whom I could have fun
And now to God I’ll ask
To forgive my sins
At that moment I woke up
From the bed and got up
I looked and only saw
A woman who was sleeping
A cold breeze blew
Gentle, calm, sweet, and fine
Dreaming of Agrestina
I wrote this poetry
A cold breeze blew
Gentle, calm, sweet, and fine
Dreaming of Agrestina
I wrote this poetry
