If you arrive in life
farther than I can reach,
I will die very jealous
of what you have advanced,
that I will not be able to resign myself
to not being the best traveler,
the most well-equipped athlete
and the most abundant lover.

And do not try to console me,

all that you have seen
and I will not be able to look at:
the depth of the rivers
that my feet will not wet,
the fragrance of the body I will not be able to love,
the immensity of a sky
in which I have never flown,
the sparks of a fire
that will not have burned me,
the boats that on the sea
I will not be able to marinate.

Do not give me comfort,
I will not know how to comfort myself.

And because I know that you
will go farther than me,
I am jealous and content,
very jealous and content
of the luck you have had,
of the luck you will have,
knowing that I have never
been a well-equipped athlete,
nor even a worthy lover,
just a traveler.
