La Mochita Negra
Lazaro Caballero
The Little Black Heifer
I saddled up my horse
And the Moon lit my way
And some dark clouds
Were scattered in the sky
Quietly, without a sound
I ventured into the hills
To see if I could get closer
To catch the stampede
There we went, all fired up
Leaving a trail behind
And when we came out the other side
The heifer was tied up
It was a little black heifer
With some white spots
And the image of a virgin
Covered her whole backside
Short and tied to a thorn bush
I circled with my lasso
And I said to myself in silence
Tomorrow I’ll take you to the ranch
The next day I returned
Early in the morning
And tied to a thorn bush
I found a calf
I approached very slowly
To see if I could untie her
And from that tender little hide
The virgin looked at me from there
When she runs down the path
They say they see her around
That little black heifer
That I once caught.
