Noite de Geada
Julio Saldanha
Frosty Night
The full silver moon
Covers the field, stretching wide
In the night, quiet and cold
A sign of a heavy frost
Not even an owl's hoot
Is heard, in this winter chill
Oh, this chilly July
That makes even the soul shiver!
I wrap myself in a blanket
Sitting by the fire's glow
Surrendered to fate's hand
Just a horse for company
My cold cot, over in the corner
Doesn't encourage me to lie down
I'd rather stay here, on the bench
Until the day breaks
I stoke the ground fire
So I don't freeze to death
While here in the barn
Through the cracks, I can see
The beautiful glow of the moon
That lights up the winter pastures
While the bare plains
Are getting covered in frost
The night is surely beautiful
Inspiring the singers
But for those who roam free
From passions and loves
The beauty of the moment
Doesn't warm my heart
Because the cold springs from within
From the fear of loneliness
On these winter nights
I crave absence
For I feel I'm losing my core
In the Julys of this longing
If it weren't for this attachment
That we hold inside
I would have taken off sooner
To a warmer place
But those who live in the countryside
And have the toil as their fate
It's no use throwing a fit
Because life will keep pushing you
So I can already picture myself
Tomorrow, breaking frost
At the crossroads of destiny
Leaving cattle in the winter pasture
