How beautiful is a São João night
Over in the backlands, you have to see it to believe
There are bonfires, lanterns, and balloons
And the excitement is so great that the fun never stops
An accordion player is hired every year
To play a well-known tune all night long
Baked potatoes under the fire
There's hominy, corn pudding, roasted corn, and cornmeal porridge
And the young folks never stop in the hall
We eat, drink, dance, and shout long live São João
