De Hoeksche Waard
Gerard Cox
The Hoeksche Waard
You hear those songs from Paris and Amsterdam all the time
Or some other spot on earth where people came to life
Vienna has its Danube - not so pretty and blue anymore
But I sing of the Haringvliet and the Old Maas
For me, as a globetrotter, the world holds no secrets
I know Madrid and Singapore, New York and Sassenheim
So I’m not singing here against better judgment
Those big cities just don’t do it for me
refrain:
I want to live where there’s still space, no high-rises or shit
A land of milk and cow dung, of mud and horse feed
A place where it’s still quiet, almost impossible to find on the map
But I’ve found it: it’s the Hoeksche Waard
A swan is nesting, a pheasant flies out of the cabbage
And in the distance, a group of kids rides their bikes to school
My neighbor’s spraying his grass, he’s got a machine for that
And all day long that damn thing’s banging in my ear
Tractors are coming and going, 'cause the beets are coming out
And inches thick, the mud’s on your window
I had nice bushes around my house and flowers about to bloom
But yesterday the goat got loose and now it’s eaten them all
refrain
I walk whistling onto my property, my chicken comes running
You just give her some grains and the egg drops from her ass
A whole day mucking around and standing in the ditch
No, I’m never leaving here in a hundred thousand years
refrain
