It was a moonlit night,
it was a clear night,
I was passing by the river, coming back from the mill!

I met a laundress
washing by the water's edge
she washed in the river,
and sang a song!

Girl you see from the mill,
girl walking down the road:
help me wring out
my washed sheet!

The laundress disappears
like scattered smoke.

Where she had hung the sheets
a pool of blood was left!
