Piccola Pietra

He arrived in wartime
from the waves touching the land
he disembarked and everyone saw
his humanity.

She looked into those dreaming eyes
so alive, so piercing
and suddenly she loved him

She felt her wings sprout
when he finally held her hands
she felt a flutter
in her stomach.

That night she soaked her happiness
with the hottest tears
that she let fall into the sea
and added salt to salt.

She
said to him
"you are, you are my love
my whole life is for you."
But he, he replied
"I have a little stone in my pocket

to build peace where there is none
so
I will carry it wherever it takes me
this hope inside
that never leaves me.

I will carry it
with all the weight it has
little stone
that maybe one day will rest.

He left because his fate
is always stronger than any wind
He left with his burden
giving her up.

That night all the breath
she pulled from deep in her belly
rose to the sky
to shout his name.

said to him
