Mon légionnaire

Édith Piaf Édith Piaf

My Legionnaire

He had big, very clear eyes
Where sometimes flashes passed
Like storms pass in the sky
He was covered in tattoos
That I never quite understood
His neck bore: Not seen, not caught
On his heart, one could read: Nobody
On his right arm, a word: Think

I don't know his name, I know nothing about him
He loved me all night long
My legionnaire!
And leaving me to my fate
He left in the morning
Full of light!
He was slim, he was handsome
He smelled like warm sand
My legionnaire!
There was sunlight on his forehead
That put light in his blond hair

Lost happiness, happiness gone
I always think of that night
And the desire for his skin gnaws at me
Sometimes I cry and then I think
That when he was on my heart
I should have shouted my happiness
But I dared not tell him anything
I was afraid to see him smile!

They found him in the desert
His beautiful eyes were open
Clouds were passing in the sky
He showed his tattoos
Smiling and then he said
Pointing to his neck: Not seen, not caught
Pointing to his heart: Nobody here
He didn't know, I forgive him

Yet I dreamt that fate
Would bring him back one beautiful morning
My legionnaire!
That we would go far away together
To some wonderful country
Full of light!
He was slim, he was handsome
They laid him under the warm sand
My legionnaire!
There was sunlight on his forehead
That put light in his blond hair
