In stiller Nacht

In a quiet night, at the first watch
a voice began to lament.
The nightly wind has sweetly and gently
brought the sound to me.
Of bitter sorrow and sadness
my heart has melted.
The little flowers with tears pure
I have watered them all

The beautiful moon wants to set,
for sorrow no longer wants to shine.
The stars, in their glitter, stand
they want to cry with me.
No birdsong, nor joyful sound
is heard in the skies
The wild animals mourn with me
even in rocks and in crevices
