La Tartulia

The other night I went to Julia's party,
the family was already gathered;
Mary, Pepa, Felícitas, Luz, and Otilia
and Camila who livened up the gathering.

While Lupe gave the baby his bottle,
Doña Cleta asked Celia for a bottle;
we, the trusted ones, formed a line
and toasted with charanda from Morelia.

Then Amelia put on the record player
and we danced there in a circle;
there was a cadet who was jealous of Chelo,
but the little one was having a blast with Gaspar.

Then they gave us jelly sandwiches,
some had punch and the sad ones had coke;
the 'cat' serving, not moving a muscle
I even took my tray to the kitchen.

There I met Ofelia's little friends,
who had smuggled their tequila;
we took a few shots behind the stack
and Amelia almost fell on us.

Then they asked Lola to sing,
and we endured 'I bid you farewell'
then Aunt Cleta played the piano
so she wouldn't talk, we gave her a good round of applause.

I stood my ground, and sang 'Letter to Eufemia'
which got me a 'rooster' and a little monkey teases me,
I was about to leave, but Ufenia stopped me
otherwise I'd be in limbo waiting in line.

But the jelly had already been digested,
because the general's wife was buttering me up;
with gossip, Carola the meddler
said the old man is coming and the fight begins.

Chaos broke out, she pulled out the gun,
I, cautious, hid behind the piano
'Julia' arrived and called Lola
and they took us to jail in a mess.
