About Chappell Roan

Kayleigh Rose Amstutz (born February 19, 1998), known professionally as Chappell Roan, is an American singer and songwriter. Working with collaborator Dan Nigro, her music draws heavily from 1980s synth-pop and early 2000s pop hits, with a strong influence from drag queens, creating a campy, vibrant aesthetic.

At 17, Roan uploaded her original song "Die Young" to YouTube, which led to her signing with Atlantic Records. In 2017, she released her debut EP, "School Nights." However, it was her 2020 single "Pink Pony Club," marking a stylistic shift. Roan took a brief hiatus before releasing a series of independent songs in 2022. Her debut album, "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess," was released through Island Records in 2023. Although not an immediate commercial hit, the album was praised by critics and appeared on several best-of-2023 lists. Its success was bolstered by her performances as a supporting act on Olivia Rodrigo's Guts World Tour, as well as appearances at major festivals like Coachella and Governors Ball. The success of her follow-up single, "Good Luck, Babe!" also played a significant role in boosting the album's popularity. By June 2024, "Midwest Princess" had peaked within the top ten on the US Billboard 200 and charted similarly in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK.

Chappell Roan writes most of her songs herself but collaborates occasionally with other songwriters. Her music has evolved into a blend of organic and electronic sounds with a pop tone, described as "dark pop with ballad undertones." Her early work captured the hardships and turbulence of teenage years with a unique candidness. Roan’s music is a "fairytale version of real life," with her persona being a larger-than-life version of herself.
