I never had the warmth of a kiss
My poor folks worked so hard
They never had time for that
And that’s how I grew up, knowing only tears

I didn’t go to school, I learned as an adult
For those things, a poor person couldn’t afford
Letters don’t stick when you’re hungry
And no one lends a hand if you’re poor

That’s why I return to this old town
Where life treated me so badly
These are my people, I won’t leave them for anything
Even if I had to suffer again
