El Preso Número Nueve

Joan Baez Joan Baez

Prisoner Number Nine

Prisoner number nine is about to confess
He's locked in the cell with the prison chaplain
And before dawn they will take his life
Because he killed his wife and a disloyal friend
He confesses like this
I killed them, yes sir
And if I were to be born again
I would kill them again

Father, I do not repent
Nor am I afraid of eternity
I know that up there in heaven
The Supreme Being will judge us
I will follow his steps
I will search for her even beyond

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Prisoner number nine was a man of great integrity
He went on the night of the duel very happy in his hut
But upon seeing his love in the arms of his rival
Rancor burned in his chest and he couldn't hold back
At the sound of the bugle the firing squad formed
And on the way to the wall the prisoner was heard saying

Father, I do not repent nor am I afraid of eternity
I know that up there in heaven, the Supreme Being will judge us
I will follow his steps, I will search for them in the beyond

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
