Cuatro Milpas
Antonio Aguilar
Four Fields
Four fields are all that’s left
Of the little ranch that was mine, oh!
Of that little house so white and pretty
How sad it is now
The pastures are empty of cattle
The pond has dried up
The wire fence that was in the yard
Has fallen down too
Will you lend me your eyes, my brown girl?
I carry them in my soul, let them see over there
The remnants of that little house
So white and pretty, how sad it is now
The crops have all been lost
Everything is gone, oh!
There are no doves, no flowers, no scents
It’s all over now
The palm trees cried for their absence
The pond has dried up, oh oh
The cowboys and muleteers
They all left, and no one stayed
That’s why I’m sad, my brown girl
That’s why I get so sad and cry
Remembering the happy afternoons
That we spent together in that place
