The Camba

(In Alfredo Zitarrosa's records, the authorship is erroneously attributed to Gilberto Rojas Taquirari)

Original version:

I come from the ranch of motacú,
where the sayubú rises,
in jasayeses I bring urucú
to sell in Santa Cruz.

In my churuno I bring somó
to invite the boss,
and in this tari I bring the alcohol
to soften his heart.

And drunk I will say to him:
"Settle my account, boss,
I don't want to work here anymore,
I want to go to the town."

And the angry boss will say:
"Grab that camba, please,
give him just two 'arrobitas',
and tell him to move away."

Long live Santa Cruz!, my homeland,
I want to walk on the sandy ground,
Oh, my Santa Cruz!, the Eastern Queen,
I like to dance in the carnival

I want to dance for the carnival.
