The Tragic Odyssey of Baby Cat Face

Nacho Vegas' song "Baby Cat Face" tells the poignant and tragic story of a woman named Esquerita, who is affectionately called Baby Cat Face. The song begins by introducing her as a woman with feline eyes and a big heart, living in a world dominated by horror. The setting is New Orleans, a city known for its vibrant culture but also its dark underbelly. Baby Cat Face finds the filth and misery of the city unbearable and yearns to escape, but she soon realizes that hiding from her reality is futile.

In an attempt to distance herself from the path of evil, Baby Cat Face joins a religious group called the Temple of Purification. She takes vows of silence and chastity, hoping to find solace in faith. However, her past catches up with her one fateful night filled with sex and alcohol. An encounter with a man who reads Verlaine leaves her pregnant, and in a fit of rage and despair, she vows revenge. Her vengeance is gruesomely fulfilled when a blessed alligator kills the man, allowing her to give birth to a child named Ángel de la Cruz, who speaks Latin immediately after birth.

The song concludes with Baby Cat Face's tragic end. A voice reassures her that she has nothing to fear, leading her to leap from a tenth-floor window. The narrative suggests that the harsh truths of life and the overwhelming hatred and depravity she faced drove her to madness. The final lines reflect on the harshness of truth and the futility of trying to understand it, leaving listeners with a haunting image of Baby Cat Face watching over them as a star in the sky.
